Social Healing Initiatives

Part of the crucial work of shamans in indigenous cultures is to create and maintain balance among humans, as well as between humans and the rest of Creation. The web of life needs tending, and the web of human relations needs deep healing.

Here are some of our social healing initiatives over the last several years:

  • Annual Dreaming the Dark healing rituals at Winter Solstice
  • Shamanism for Activists trainings
  • Reweaving the Web journey circles, to seek guidance from the compassionate spirits in healing social wounds
  • A community healing ritual for Portland's tense Alberta Street neighborhood, which is undergoing gentrification
  • Provided shamanic representation and leadership in interfaith spiritual organizations, including Enterbeing spiritual cooperative, the Network of Spiritual Progressives, and the Northeast Portland Interfaith Peace Group
  • Healing rituals for the Gulf Coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, for a massacre site in the U.S. South, and for the Middle East
  • A public, interfaith peacemaking ritual across from the U.S. White House for the DC Spiritual Activism Conference, 2006, with Myron Eshowsky
  • Two public peacemaking rituals in Portland, Oregon - one focused on bringing peace with justice to a gentrifying neighborhood, the other on feeding the spirit of non-violence, with the Northeast Portland Interfaith Peace Group
  • With the Northeast Portland Interfaith Peace Group, convened a World Cafe-style gathering of 100 diverse stakeholders in the gentrifying inner Northeast Portland neighborhoods, to bring about candid exchange on how to create inclusive neighborhoods in which everyone can thrive.

Lenore's new article, Ritual and Activism: The Alchemy of Social Transformation, discusses the role of ritual in social healing. You can download the version published in The Sacred Hoop here.

Circle of the Living Earth Scholarship Fund

We strongly feel that shamanic healing and shamanic instruction should be available to our sisters and brothers of all income brackets.

We also want to be able to provide shamanic consulting to non-profit organizations, as well as leadership training to low-income folks through our Shamanism for Activists trainings and our Shamanic Healing Apprenticeship Program.

We can accomplish this service to low-income populations with your support. Please give generously to support our sisters and brothers of lower incomes in receiving the healing and instruction they desire today with a tax-deductible donation in any amount.

You can send your check to Circle of the Living Earth-AIWP, P.O. Box 11645, Portland, OR 97211, or to make a secure, online donation now, click on the button below:

Temple of the Sacred Mother

The Temple of the Sacred Mother is a project of Violet McBride, a 2007 graduate of our Shamanic Healing Apprenticeship Program.

Violet is a visionary artist as well as a shamanic practitioner. She describes her traveling installation this way:

"The Temple of the Sacred Mother is a Visionary Temple for the Earth taking form as an Ancient Old Growth Tree of Life, built from thousands of prayer flags carrying our hopes and visions for the New Earth we wish to bring into being.

"The Temple seeks to open space in our Collective Consciousness for a New World where Divinity is re-envisioned as flowing through each of Us, through all Life on the Planet, and through to the Earth and Universe as a Sacred Whole; where we consciously Co-Create the World we wish to share with the rest of Humanity and all Creatures, Plants, and Spirits of the Earth, through the Visioning and Manifestation of a World in Harmony and Balance. It is a place to rediscover vital pieces of the Divine Puzzle that have been forgotten through Millenia of Unlearning, and in reconnecting these strands of the Web within our Minds, we open a passageway to walk into the Mystery, Remembering All that We have Always Known."

Circle of the Living Earth is collecting donations to support growth of the Temple of the Sacred Mother project.
